On Sunday night, the U.S. Embassy and Consulate for Mexico issued a travel advisory for Matamoros, located just across the border from Brownsville, Texas. Authorities warned the public to expect increased security and potential long delays at all bridges connecting the two cities.
While the view from the International Gateway Bridge on Monday afternoon appeared typical, behind the scenes, authorities were responding to reported threats to public safety.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed that a bomb threat was made at the port of entry on Monday morning. In response, the Brownsville Police Department was asked to install a police tower at the facility. However, a spokesperson for Brownsville PD stated that the department had not increased its presence or patrols in the area.
Julio Hinojosa, a Brownsville resident who frequently travels between the two cities, noted that while the situation can be risky, it is possible to avoid danger. “As long as you mind your own business and don’t engage in risky behavior, that’s mostly what I’ve heard in Matamoros,” he explained.
Travelers to the area are advised to remain vigilant and aware of the ongoing security situation.
