Motorists are being urged to prepare for heavy traffic this Easter weekend, with 19.1 million people expected to drive on Good Friday alone, according to the AA. With Easter falling three weeks later than in 2024, bank holiday traffic is predicted to increase by 15%—partly driven by hopes for warmer spring weather.
The AA anticipates:
Good Friday: 19.1 million drivers
Easter Saturday: 18.5 million
Easter Sunday & Monday: 18.2 million each day
Expect severe congestion around city centers, retail parks, and major routes throughout the weekend. The AA recommends leaving extra travel time and planning alternate routes if possible.
Top travel tips from the AA:
Check tyre pressure before setting off
Ensure oil and coolant levels are topped up
Pack essentials in case of long delays (water, snacks, phone charger)
Shaun Jones, AA Patrol of the Year, emphasized the importance of “simple checks” to prevent breakdowns and ensure smoother travel during one of the busiest weekends of the year.
