China is preparing for a massive travel surge ahead of the upcoming May Day holiday, with the eight-day travel period expected to run from April 29 to May 6 and passenger traffic peaking on Labour Day, May 1.
In a statement released on April 15, China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (China Railway) confirmed that tickets for the holiday period are now on sale, and that rail networks across the country will operate under a peak schedule to accommodate increased demand.
To manage the influx of travelers, China Railway plans to operate at least 12,000 trains per day. Additional measures include launching more passenger routes, deploying overnight high-speed trains, and expanding capacity by attaching extra carriages to existing services.
Authorities anticipate particularly strong demand for family reunions, tourism, and spring outings, underscoring the growing domestic travel appetite as China heads into one of its busiest holiday seasons.
