Beijing, August 5, 2024 – China has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to exercise caution when traveling to Lebanon, following the recent assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a Hezbollah commander in Beirut.
The Chinese Embassy in Lebanon emphasized the severity and complexity of the security situation in the region, advising Chinese nationals to stay vigilant.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in Lebanon remind Chinese citizens to pay close attention to the development of the local situation and be cautious when traveling to Lebanon in the near future,” the embassy stated in a message released late Monday.
Tensions have heightened between Hezbollah and Israel since the assassination of senior Hezbollah military commander Fouad Shukr in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburb on July 30.
The following day, Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran in an attack attributed to Israel, although Israeli authorities have neither confirmed nor denied involvement.
In response, Hamas and Iran have vowed retaliation for Haniyeh’s assassination, while Hezbollah has pledged to avenge Shukr’s killing.
Concerns are growing over the potential for a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah, amidst a protracted exchange of cross-border fire.
This escalation coincides with Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in nearly 40,000 fatalities since an attack by Hamas last October.
