As Labor Day approaches, a leading U.S. travel spot is gaining even more traction as an end-of-summer getaway. According to AAA booking data, Seattle has emerged as the top destination for Labor Day weekend travel. The city has seen a 30% increase in popularity among domestic travelers this year, continuing its trend from 2023.
Overall, domestic travel has risen by 9%, while costs for U.S. trips have decreased by 2%. Travelers driving to their destinations will benefit from lower gas prices, with the average cost now around $3.50 per gallon, compared to $3.81 last year. The decrease in gas prices reflects reduced overall demand, partly due to changes in driving habits brought about by increased remote work during the pandemic.
In contrast, fewer Americans are planning international travel for Labor Day this year compared to 2023. While domestic trip costs have slightly decreased, international travel expenses have surged by 11%, according to AAA data. European cities remain the most popular international destinations, with eight out of the top ten international spots booked through AAA located in Europe.
Best Times to Travel on Labor Day
Travelers should anticipate increased congestion at airports and on roads starting Thursday, August 29, leading into the Labor Day weekend. Traffic is expected to be heaviest in the afternoons and early evenings on Thursday and Friday. To avoid delays, it is advisable to travel early in the morning on these days. For those departing on Saturday, an afternoon departure is recommended.
“Travelers should prepare for significant traffic as commuters and vacationers converge,” said Bob Pishue, a transportation analyst at Inrix. “Using traffic apps, checking local news, and monitoring 511 traveler information services can help navigate congestion and ease travel stress.”
Traffic is expected to peak in the afternoon on Sunday and continue through Labor Day, Monday, September 2.
