How Americans are Reinventing Retirement – They’re Choosing Travel and Hobbies Over Relaxing

A recent survey of 2,000 Americans nearing or already in retirement has revealed that retirees are living more dynamic and fulfilling lives than their younger selves might have imagined.

The poll, commissioned by IHG Hotels & Resorts and conducted by Talker Research, highlights a “Benjamin Button” effect among retirees, who report feeling increasingly youthful and energetic. Approximately 60% of respondents are either planning or have already embarked on a “retirement reinvention,” embracing new pursuits and hobbies. More than a quarter believe their younger selves would envy their current lifestyle.

The survey found that nearly half (43%) of retirees have rekindled old hobbies, while a third (33%) view retirement as an opportunity to acquire new skills. Eleven percent are diving into sports, 17% are exploring writing, and 16% are learning new languages—possibly in preparation for retirement travel.

The research indicates that four in ten retirees have either taken or intend to take a significant trip to celebrate their retirement. Most (59%) plan to travel more during retirement than they did while working. This shift may stem from the 36% of retirees who regret their heavy work schedules and wish they had spent more time on personal interests.

Barriers to travel during their careers included budget constraints (49%) and job flexibility issues (43%). To compensate, half of the retirees surveyed plan to reduce spending in other areas to allocate more funds for travel.

The top retirement destinations include U.S. locations for 59% of respondents, Europe for 31%, and other North American destinations for 23%. A few adventurous retirees have even set their sights on Antarctica.

Connor Smith, Vice President at IHG Hotels & Resorts, commented, “It’s remarkable to see so many retirees seizing the chance to explore interests and experiences they missed during their working years. It’s inspiring to witness them fully enjoying their retirement and living their best lives.”
