The United States is on track to become Portugal’s leading source of tourists if current trends persist. Data for the first half of 2024 reveals a 15% increase in American visitors compared to the same period in 2023, bringing the total number of US tourists to Portugal to 1.08 million. This figure marks a significant rise from the 584,700 American tourists recorded in the first half of 2022, nearly doubling over two years.
Currently, US tourist numbers are just shy of those from the UK, which remains Portugal’s traditional top market. The UK contributed 1.2 million visitors during the same timeframe, reflecting a slower growth rate of just 6% compared to the previous year. Given the ongoing trends, experts suggest that the US could soon surpass the UK as the primary source of tourists for Portugal.
