A preseason matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings, scheduled for Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena, has been postponed due to travel complications involving the Penguins’ team plane. The game will now take place at 7 p.m. on Monday in Detroit.
In a statement, the Penguins expressed their regret, stating, “Continued mechanical issues with our team plane were not able to be rectified, and despite great effort, there was no method to travel to Detroit safely. We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to all fans, media, officials and the Red Wings who were already at Little Caesars Arena.”
Typically, NHL teams travel on the same day as their preseason games. The Penguins had conducted a morning skate in Cranberry before attempting to make their way to Detroit.
This postponement is particularly notable as it coincides with a busy schedule for both teams. On Monday, the Red Wings will also face off against the Buffalo Sabres, necessitating a split squad arrangement. Some players will remain in Detroit for the game against the Penguins while others head to Buffalo.
The Penguins are set to play against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday evening in Sudbury, Ontario, as part of the NHL’s Hockeyville promotion.
