New Travel Requirements to Replace Driver’s License for Domestic Flights by 2025

Mary

Starting May 7, 2025, Americans will face new identification requirements for domestic air travel, marking the end of the driver’s license as a valid travel document within the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially announced that a REAL ID or other approved forms of identification will be mandatory for boarding flights.

The Shift to REAL ID

The REAL ID is a specialized form of identification developed under the REAL ID Act of 2005 to enhance national security standards. It is primarily aimed at bolstering security protocols at federal facilities and airports, ensuring that traveler identities are accurately verified. Until now, most travelers have relied on their standard driver’s licenses or state-issued ID cards for domestic air travel, but this will no longer be sufficient come May 2025.

What Will Be Required Starting in May 2025

As of May 7, 2025, travelers within the U.S. will need either a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other Transportation Security Administration (TSA)-recognized documents, such as an enhanced driver’s license, to board any commercial flights. Standard state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards will no longer be valid for domestic travel. This new rule applies to all U.S. citizens aged 18 and older, making it crucial for everyone to update their identification in advance of the deadline.

How to Identify a REAL ID

If you’re unsure whether your current driver’s license qualifies as a REAL ID, simply check for a star in the upper-right corner of the card. This star indicates compliance with REAL ID regulations. If your license has this symbol, you are all set for future air travel. If not, you will need to upgrade your identification before the new regulations take effect.

With this major change on the horizon, travelers are urged to review their IDs and ensure they meet the new requirements, avoiding complications and potential disruptions to their travel plans.
