Generative AI is set to become a key focus in the travel technology sector by 2025, according to a recent report from Amadeus. However, concerns around data security and talent shortages are emerging as significant challenges.
The report, titled Navigating the Future: How Generative AI is Transforming the Travel Industry, surveyed over 300 experts within the travel ecosystem to gauge the industry’s outlook on this cutting-edge technology.
Generative AI Tops Travel Tech Priorities
Nearly half (46%) of industry leaders surveyed ranked generative AI as a “top priority” for 2025, surpassing other emerging technologies. The trend is even more pronounced in the Asia Pacific region, where 61% of respondents place generative AI at the top of their agendas. This suggests that Asia Pacific could be at the forefront of adopting and implementing generative AI solutions in the travel industry.
Other technologies considered crucial for the near future include data management (38%), cloud architecture (36%), non-generative AI infrastructure (34%), and biometrics (23%).
Globally, 51% of travel technology leaders already see generative AI as a “significant” factor in their respective countries’ travel industries. A further 36% believe it will become significant within the next year, while 11% predict it will take one to two years for generative AI to gain prominence. Only a small fraction (2%) expects generative AI to take more than three years to make a substantial impact.
Investment and Collaboration in Generative AI
Currently, 41% of travel companies report having the budget and resources necessary to implement generative AI technologies. Furthermore, 87% of industry leaders express a willingness to collaborate with third-party vendors to develop AI-powered applications. This openness to partnerships suggests a growing recognition of the importance of external expertise in advancing AI innovation.
While the enthusiasm for generative AI is clear, the report also highlights potential roadblocks, particularly in data security and the need for specialized talent. As the technology continues to evolve, addressing these challenges will be critical to ensuring successful integration into the travel industry.
The findings underscore the increasing importance of generative AI in shaping the future of travel, with 2025 set to be a pivotal year for the technology’s widespread adoption and impact.
