BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Construction on the new Beckley Travel Plaza is progressing steadily, as the $60 million project gradually replaces the former plaza that was destroyed by a fire in 2022. Located next to Tamarack in Beckley, the new travel plaza is set to become a state-of-the-art facility with a range of updated amenities and services designed to enhance the travel experience.

The project is being overseen by the Parkways Authority, with Director Jeff Miller providing updates on its progress. On November 27, 2024, Miller shared that the exterior of the plaza is beginning to take shape, including an eye-catching light display. The lights, which can change colors, are currently set to reflect the blue and gold of the West Virginia University Mountaineers, adding a local touch to the design.

Director Miller also highlighted some of the key features that will be available at the new plaza. These include expanded parking areas, a modern gas station, and charging stations for electric vehicles, catering to the growing demand for eco-friendly travel options.

As for dining options, Miller confirmed that food operations at the plaza will be managed by the private company, Arias. Among the major names coming to the plaza are a Starbucks that will accept mobile orders, a Popeye’s Chicken restaurant with a drive-thru, and a Wendy’s that will be open 24 hours a day. In addition, there will be a convenience market offering a variety of snacks and travel essentials.

For those seeking to enjoy their meals outdoors, the plaza will also feature outdoor dining areas. A dedicated food court will offer a mix of regional food from local restaurants, including Tamarack, a well-known West Virginia arts and crafts center, making it a unique spot for both travelers and locals alike.

On November 27, Jim Kelley, a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, took a moment to photograph the construction site from Tamarack. Kelley, who has been stopping at the Travel Plaza and Tamarack nearly every year since 1978, recalled fond memories of the former plaza. He and his wife had made it a tradition to visit the area, only stopping during the pandemic.

“It’s nice to see the plaza coming back,” Kelley said, reflecting on the many years he and his wife had spent making stops there. “We’ve always enjoyed the food and the rest areas. It’ll be nice when it’s finished.”

Although the plaza was heavily damaged in the 2022 fire, the new development promises to bring a fresh, modern look with more amenities and attractions for travelers passing through the region. The plaza’s location next to Tamarack, which is known for showcasing West Virginia’s culture and craftsmanship, adds an extra layer of appeal for those making stops in the area.

The construction of the Beckley Travel Plaza is expected to be completed soon, with the final phase anticipated to open in early 2025. Once finished, the plaza will not only provide vital services for motorists traveling along the West Virginia Turnpike but also become a key stop for visitors exploring the beauty and culture of the state.
