Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway Set to Transform Travel and Economy

by Mary

The Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, commonly known as the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, is poised to significantly improve travel and connectivity across Maharashtra. This state-of-the-art expressway reduces travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from 15 hours to approximately 8 hours, benefiting millions of residents and businesses along its route.

Stretching 701 kilometers, the expressway passes through 10 major districts, including Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Aurangabad, Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Thane. It also extends its reach to 14 additional districts through connecting highways. Designed for maximum efficiency, the expressway features 65 flyovers, 24 interchanges, six tunnels, and numerous pedestrian, vehicular, and cattle underpasses. These additions ensure smooth and uninterrupted travel.

The expressway also includes 26 toll booths, with charges based on the distance traveled. To support the development along this corridor, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is working on several initiatives, including the establishment of 24 planned townships and Krushi Samruddhi Nagar, aimed at promoting agro-industrial growth in the region.

The Samruddhi Mahamarg will not only enhance domestic travel but is also expected to boost Maharashtra’s economy. By improving connectivity to major trade hubs, such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai and Nagpur’s Multimodal International Hub Airport (MIHAN), the expressway will facilitate smoother movement of goods, benefiting industries and consumers alike.

Additionally, the Samruddhi Mahamarg will integrate with other major expressways, including the Nagpur-Gondia Expressway, Pune-Aurangabad Green Expressway, and the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. This integration will support the EXIM (exports-imports) trade and improve freight logistics across India.

The Maharashtra government is also planning a second phase of expansion to extend the expressway, covering additional districts like Bhandara, Gondia, and Gadchiroli. As part of the Sagarmala initiative, plans to link the route to Dahanu Port are also underway, further solidifying Maharashtra’s role as a key warehousing hub and boosting the state’s supply chain operations.
