Lulutai Airlines has confirmed the addition of a chartered ATR 72 aircraft to accommodate the heavy holiday demand on the Tongatapu to Vava’u route. Starting Monday, the aircraft will operate 12 scheduled flights per week, providing vital extra capacity during the busy Christmas period.
The ATR 72, which is registered to Air Chathams, arrived in Tonga on Saturday from Auckland. With a seating capacity of 72 passengers, the aircraft will help ease the pressure on flight bookings between Tongatapu and the outer island of Vava’u. The additional service will provide 864 extra seats each week, helping meet the increased demand for pre-Christmas travel.
Jackson Afu of Lulutai Airlines shared that the new flights are already proving popular, with the aircraft quickly filling up. “We are filling the aircraft at the moment,” he said.
Lulutai Airlines, which is government-owned, plans to continue the extra flights for the time being, although the duration of the additional service has not yet been confirmed.
