DOT Finalizes Wheelchair Plan to Support Travelers with Disabilities

by Mary

With the busy holiday season in full swing, travelers are navigating crowded roads and airports. For individuals who rely on mobility devices, traveling can be particularly challenging. To help alleviate some of this stress, the U.S. Department of Transportation recently finalized a new wheelchair plan designed to improve accessibility for passengers with disabilities.

The plan includes 13 key requirements, all of which can be found on the Department of Transportation’s website. These improvements include enhanced assistance, timely notifications for passengers, better staff training, and measures to address delays in returning mobility devices.

At Bluegrass Airport, accessibility is a top priority. Lauren Simmerman, the airport’s community relations manager, emphasized the importance of accommodating all travelers. “Travel can be stressful for anyone, especially for individuals dealing with accessibility issues,” she said. “From ADA-compliant parking spaces in our short and long-term lots to support inside the terminal, we want to ensure all travelers feel comfortable and informed.”

Bluegrass Airport also participates in the TSA Cares program, which allows travelers to call 72 hours before their flight to learn about specific accommodations and what to expect during the security process.

“We want travel to be as easy and enjoyable for everyone as it possibly can be,” Simmerman added.

For a smoother travel experience, Simmerman recommends arriving at the airport one to two hours before your flight and ensuring all necessary documents and arrangements are in place before leaving home.
