Severe Weather Warning: Multiple Storms Expected During Holiday Rush

by Mary

The Bay Area and Central Coast are bracing for multiple rainstorms starting this weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The storms are set to hit during the busy holiday travel period, potentially affecting travelers.

The NWS is tracking a pattern change that will bring several rounds of rain and high surf, with the most significant impacts expected on Monday and Tuesday. The storms may bring substantial rainfall through Christmas, with the possibility of continued wet weather after the holiday.

A second system arriving on Sunday will bring light rain, while the third system, arriving on Monday and Tuesday, is expected to deliver more widespread and heavier rainfall. Rain totals for this system are still being finalized, but it is expected to be a “strong low-pressure system” that will bring significant rainfall to the region. The North Bay is likely to see the heaviest rainfall.

The NWS has warned that flooding of creeks, small streams, and roads is possible. Monday and Tuesday will also see strong winds, with gusts reaching above 35 mph along the coast and through valleys and passes. Winds may cause downed tree branches, hazardous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles, and unsecured objects being blown around.

The chance of rain will persist after Christmas, with the potential for urban and small stream flooding continuing into the week.

This stormy weather is arriving just as AAA anticipates a record number of holiday travelers, with nearly 90% expected to travel by road. Travelers should prepare for potential delays and disruptions as storms move through the region.
