Traffic, Safety Concerns Rise as Millions Travel to Mexico for Holidays

by Mary

As the holiday season reaches its peak, officials on the southern border are warning of major traffic congestion as thousands of people across the United States travel to Mexico to reunite with their families. Laredo, Texas, is expected to experience long wait times, with congestion lines potentially lasting hours. In Eagle Pass, Texas, the International Bridges One and Two are seeing heavy traffic that could also disrupt commerce, with some vehicles being rerouted to alternative routes.

For many, the journey to visit loved ones in Mexico can take up to two weeks, but recent years have made these trips more perilous due to the presence of drug cartels operating along the southern border. To ensure the safety of travelers, hundreds of police officers have been deployed along key routes to assist in monitoring the roads. On the Mexican side, authorities have also increased their security measures, with the state of Chihuahua deploying an additional 400 officers.

In response to the holiday rush, the Texas Department of Public Safety has also increased its presence. With an estimated 9.1 million Texans expected to travel this year, part of the larger 119.3 million Americans predicted to hit the road or take to the skies during the year-end holidays, the need for heightened security is critical. Officials are urging all travelers heading into Mexico to stay informed by following local law enforcement updates on social media to ensure a safer journey.
