As the holiday season approaches, safety remains a top priority for travelers in Alabama, whether they’re heading through Dothan, across the Wiregrass, or beyond. With millions expected to travel, law enforcement is urging drivers to prioritize safety to avoid crashes and other dangerous incidents.
“The biggest thing is making sure our Alabama travelers or those visiting from out of town are traveling safely so they can make it to their loved ones and avoid the risk of crashes or worse, losing their lives this holiday season,” said Alabama State Trooper Kendra McKinney.
According to the Associated Press, over 119 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home between Saturday and New Year’s Day, with 90% of these travelers going by car. As traffic increases, so does the risk of accidents, including speeding, distracted driving, and impaired motorists.
“We always see an increase of cars on the highways, which means more possibilities of speeders, people not wearing seat belts, and drivers operating under the influence. Our law enforcement presence aims to deter these risky behaviors,” Trooper McKinney explained.
To address these concerns, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has launched its 12 Days of Safety campaign, reminding drivers of essential safety precautions. Troopers encourage wearing seat belts even for short trips and having a clear plan when alcohol is involved.
“If you’re attending a party, have a sober buddy, call a cab, or use a rideshare service. The most important thing is to avoid impaired driving,” McKinney advised.
While major highways like 231 and 84 see heavy traffic, county roads also pose risks due to wildlife crossings and distracted drivers. McKinney emphasizes the importance of being prepared for any situation.
“Honestly, anytime someone gets behind the wheel, we want them to be prepared for the worst. Practicing safe driving habits sets drivers up for the best chance to avoid a crash,” she added.
