Severe winter weather continues to cause significant disruptions across the UK, with the Met Office issuing multiple yellow ice warnings in effect until Friday morning. The warnings cover much of the Midlands, North West England, Eastern England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, running from 4pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday. Scotland’s snow and ice warning has been extended until 10am Friday. A separate yellow warning for ice will be in effect from 3am to 11am on Friday, covering South West England and parts of South Wales.
Temperatures are expected to drop as low as -16C in the northeast of England and Scotland on Thursday night, intensifying the freezing conditions.
At Manchester Airport, runways were temporarily closed due to heavy snowfall. A statement issued on Thursday morning confirmed that the runways were cleared and reopened by 10am, but warned passengers of potential delays as a result of the earlier closure. The airport reassured travelers that passenger safety was the top priority.
The A30 in Cornwall was also closed westbound on Thursday morning after a multiple vehicle collision between the Avers and Tolvaddon junctions. Emergency services responded to the scene as traffic built up. Devon and Cornwall Police, along with Devon County Council Highways, had previously warned that snow and ice conditions might lead to long delays and road closures.
The freezing weather has caused significant travel disruptions across the UK, with snow ploughs even becoming stuck in traffic queues caused by minor incidents.
