Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to discontinue the store value card (CSC), also known as the travel card, by April, according to sources within the company. The CMRL has already stopped issuing new cards and topping up existing cards at 11 metro stations since January.
This move is not sudden, as CMRL has been considering ending the issuance of the CSC since the introduction of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) in April 2023. A CMRL official explained that while multiple deadlines had been set to phase out the CSC, the growing adoption of the NCMC has accelerated the decision to halt the issue of new travel cards and top-ups in the coming months.
