Emirates is on track to become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline, with certification from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) expected in the coming months. This achievement follows the completion of autism and sensory-awareness training for over 30,000 cabin crew and ground staff.
The airline’s comprehensive training program aims to equip its staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to better assist passengers with autism and sensory sensitivities. Topics covered in the training include understanding the autism spectrum, identifying potential triggers, and addressing individual passenger needs. This builds on Emirates’ 2023 initiative, where 23,000 employees completed the “Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities” course.
In 2025, Emirates will introduce new services to improve accessibility for travelers. These include sensory guides, digital tools designed to help passengers with autism navigate sensory-rich environments at Dubai International Airport and on flights. The sensory guides were developed after an audit conducted by IBCCES to assess sensory factors such as noise and lighting. The airline will also offer neurodiverse-friendly sensory aids, including fidget toys, to help passengers stay calm and focused during their journey.
This initiative is part of Dubai’s broader objective of becoming a Certified Autism Destination and a leading accessible travel hub. Collaborations with Dubai Airports, the Department of Economy and Tourism, and other partners aim to expand inclusive travel options across the region.
