Taiwan Issues Travel Caution for Macau and Hong Kong Amid Rising Tensions

by Mary

As the Lunar New Year holiday approaches, Taiwanese authorities are urging their citizens to exercise caution when traveling to Macau and Hong Kong, which remain under an “orange” travel alert. This advisory, issued by the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), comes amid growing tensions since June, when the alert level was raised from “yellow” to “orange” following Beijing’s announcement of penalties for advocates of Taiwanese independence.

The current alert advises against nonessential travel to China and its territories. Travelers are also reminded that certain items, including pepper spray, stun guns, electroshock devices, brass knuckles, switchblades, folding knives, retractable batons, and e-cigarette devices, are strictly prohibited in both Macau and Hong Kong.

The MAC has emphasized the importance of familiarizing oneself with local laws by visiting the websites of the Hong Kong Police Force, Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, and Macau Customs Service. Taiwanese travelers are encouraged to register with the MAC before their trips to ensure their safety, and a 24-hour hotline has been established for assistance in emergencies. The MAC also stressed the importance of following regulations related to the importation of animal products.
