A SEPTA train traveling from Philadelphia to Wilmington caught fire Thursday evening, disrupting Amtrak service along the Northeast Corridor.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. near the Crum Lynne Station in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. According to SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch, the fire was discovered as passengers were being evacuated.
“Quick action by our crews helped ensure a safe outcome,” Busch said. “We don’t yet know where the fire started, but it appears to have originated underneath the train before spreading.”
Passengers reported seeing smoke just minutes after departing Philadelphia. As a result, service to Wilmington was temporarily halted.
Amtrak has since resumed operations between Philadelphia and Wilmington, though lingering delays are expected due to rail congestion.
