Destination NSW has introduced a new initiative to support Aboriginal tourism businesses in regional areas, responding to a growing demand for Aboriginal experiences in the state.
The Aboriginal Experience Development Pathway 2025 will be delivered by Destination NSW in partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Tourism Operators Council (NATOC). Founded in 2014 and incorporated in 2017, NATOC’s mission is to amplify the voice of Aboriginal-owned tourism businesses and offer mentorship to Aboriginal tourism entrepreneurs, helping them navigate their business journeys.
This partnership aims to foster relationships, connect on Country, and provide aspiring Aboriginal tourism operators with valuable insights into the visitor economy. The Pathway will also offer access to services that will help develop their tourism offerings.
Thirty Aboriginal tourism businesses will benefit from this program, which includes online and one-on-one training sessions, networking opportunities, participation in the Destination NSW media familiarisation program, and a one-day business development workshop.
Tourism Research Australia data shows NSW is Australia’s top destination for Aboriginal tourism, with a record 814,300 visitors engaging in Aboriginal experiences in the year ending September 2024. These visitors spent a total of 20.7 million nights in the state, contributing $3.1 billion in expenditure across their trips.
The Aboriginal Experience Development Pathway 2025 is open to eligible businesses across more than 50 local government areas in NSW. Aboriginal-owned or led businesses in areas like accommodation, tours, activities, museums, galleries, wineries, and more are invited to apply.
