Turkish tourism authorities are optimistic about the increasing number of travelers from Kolkata and eastern India to Turkiye, signaling strong potential for a direct flight route from Kolkata to Istanbul. In 2024, around 3.4 lakh Indian tourists visited Turkiye, with at least 10% of them coming from Kolkata. Currently, travelers from eastern India must transit through Delhi or Mumbai to reach Istanbul, with Turkish Airlines and IndiGo Airlines offering daily flights from these cities.
While Turkish Airlines has previously evaluated the possibility of launching direct flights from Kolkata to Istanbul, concerns over filling premium business class seats had hindered the decision. However, the demand for economy class seats on the route remains strong, making it a viable option for further consideration.
The Turkish delegation, including Basak Onsal Demir, the Culture and Tourism Counsellor at the Turkish Embassy, and Cagla Yontem, the Director for MICE (Weddings and Incentives), are keen on leveraging this growing travel trend to enhance connectivity between the two cities.
