Thailand is set to make luxury travel more accessible to its citizens with the introduction of an exclusive co-payment scheme that will cover 50% of vacation costs. The new initiative, aimed at encouraging domestic tourism, will significantly reduce travel expenses for Thai nationals, offering them an affordable way to explore hidden gems across the country.
The scheme, modeled after the successful “Khon La Krueng” and “We Travel Together” programs from 2020, was designed to stimulate local spending during the COVID-19 pandemic when international travel was restricted. The proposed program follows a similar model, but with a focus on subsidizing domestic travel for Thai citizens.
Under the new plan, the government will fund half of the travel expenses, allowing participants to enjoy vacations for half the price. The program is designed to promote exploration of lesser-known destinations, giving local tourists an opportunity to rediscover Thailand’s cultural and natural treasures.
Minister Sorawong Thienthong has confirmed that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports is awaiting final approval from the cabinet for the initiative, with an initial budget of 3.5 billion THB (approximately 103 million USD) allocated for the first phase. Given the popularity and success of past travel initiatives, the government expects the program to sell out quickly once it’s officially launched.
This initiative is expected to drive a surge in domestic tourism, supporting local businesses and boosting the Thai economy, while also giving citizens a chance to enjoy a luxurious vacation experience at a fraction of the cost.
