Political Tensions & Tariffs Drive Decline in Canadian Travel to the U.S.

by Mary

Political tensions and tariffs have led to a sharp decline in demand for travel to the United States, prompting several Canadian airlines to cancel flights to American destinations. The tensions, sparked by U.S. tariffs under President Trump, have caused many Canadian travelers to reconsider their trips to the U.S., with many opting to boycott American products and travel.

Flair Airlines has responded by halting its Nashville route, a move reflecting the broader sentiment among Canadians. Kim Bowie, Flair’s director of communications, confirmed, “I can confirm that Flair won’t be flying to Nashville this summer,” noting that the decision was driven by reduced demand for U.S. travel.

This shift is further supported by data from Flight Centre Travel Group Canada, which shows a 40% drop in Canadian bookings to U.S. cities in February 2025 compared to the previous year. Additionally, one in five customers has canceled their U.S. trips in the past three months, highlighting the growing challenges facing the travel industry amid the ongoing political climate.

Flair Airlines is not alone in facing these difficulties. Other Canadian carriers, such as Air Canada and WestJet, have also reported significant drops in bookings to the U.S. WestJet, in particular, has noticed a trend of travelers choosing destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean over the U.S., reflecting the dissatisfaction with U.S. policies.
