Indonesia has officially joined the ranks of Asia’s most affordable travel destinations, alongside Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. This comes after a sharp drop in the value of the Indonesian rupiah, which recently reached its lowest point in over two decades, making the country more budget-friendly for international visitors.
The rupiah fell to 16,642 against the US dollar on Tuesday, its weakest level since the 1998 Asian financial crisis. With a more than 3% drop in value this year, the rupiah is one of the poorest-performing currencies among emerging markets in 2025. However, this decline presents an opportunity for budget travelers, as Indonesia now offers even greater value compared to its Southeast Asian neighbors.
As the currency continues to struggle, Indonesia is quickly becoming a top destination for cost-conscious travelers in 2025.
