Indonesia Sees 20% Tourism Boost in 2024, Promotes Destinations Beyond Bali

by Mary

Indonesia’s tourism sector experienced a strong recovery in 2024, with international arrivals increasing by nearly 20% compared to the previous year. A total of 14 million tourists visited the archipelago, marking a significant rebound from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

While Bali remains the top entry point for global travelers, Indonesia’s tourism strategy is shifting towards promoting destinations beyond the island. Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali saw 6.3 million international arrivals in 2024—more than twice the number of arrivals at Jakarta, the country’s capital. This figure is nearly identical to Bali’s pre-pandemic levels in 2019, a year when Indonesia set a record with 16.1 million international visitors, with Bali playing a key role.

To address overtourism in Bali, Indonesia is highlighting alternative destinations across its 17,000 islands. Locations like Raja Ampat in West Papua, renowned for its vibrant marine life and crystal-clear waters, and Komodo Island, home to the famous Komodo dragons, are being promoted as top alternatives.

Improved air connectivity has helped make these lesser-known gems more accessible. Airlines have increased direct flights to destinations like Manado in North Sulawesi, a hub for world-class diving sites.
