Britons have been given updated guidance on the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), which is set to launch in October 2025. The system will change entry requirements for UK travelers visiting popular holiday destinations across the Schengen area.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has outlined what travelers should expect when the system goes live. The changes will apply to those visiting Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Greece, Poland, Norway, Belgium, and other Schengen countries.
“The EU plans to introduce the Entry/Exit System, a new digital border system that will change requirements for British nationals traveling to the Schengen area,” the FCDO stated. “UK passport holders will need to register biometric details, such as fingerprints or a photo, upon arrival.”
The EES will replace the current system of manually stamping passports. While the rollout is planned for October, the European Union has yet to confirm the exact launch date and will provide further updates before implementation.
