The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge witnessed an unprecedented surge in traffic over the Qingming Festival holiday, with both passenger and vehicle numbers reaching all-time highs for this period. From April 4 to noon on April 6, over 272,000 travellers and 57,000 vehicles crossed the border at the Zhuhai Port, marking year-on-year increases of 32.1% and 41.7%, respectively, according to border authorities.
The bridge, a vital link between Hong Kong and the western Pearl River Delta, has become increasingly popular for short cross-border travel. Travel times from Hong Kong to nearby cities like Jiangmen, Zhongshan, and Foshan have been reduced to just one to two hours. This convenience made the bridge a preferred route for many Hong Kong and Macau families, who combined ancestral visits with family reunions and short holidays during the three-day break.
As a result, there was a 50% increase in trips made by Hong Kong and Macau single-plated vehicles, totaling 41,000 trips. Additionally, 42,000 residents from mainland China used the bridge during the holiday, a 30% increase compared to last year. The number of foreign nationals crossing the bridge also saw a notable rise, reaching 3,700, an increase of 27.4% compared to the same period last year.
