The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advisory for Burundi, urging British nationals to avoid certain regions due to escalating security risks. The advisory highlights Rusizi National Park, a popular wildlife destination located just 15 km north of Bujumbura, the capital, as a high-risk area. Known for its rich biodiversity, including hippopotamuses and sitatungas, the park lies next to the Rusizi River. However, due to growing security concerns in the surrounding areas, the Foreign Office recommends that travelers refrain from visiting this natural reserve.
In addition, the UK government has strongly advised against all travel to the Cibitoke and Bubanza provinces. These areas have become increasingly dangerous due to the presence of rebel factions in Kibira National Park and the threat of armed incursions from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). With the risk of violence in these regions rising, the Foreign Office is urging potential visitors to reconsider their travel plans and prioritize their safety.
