Jetstar has launched a new direct service between Christchurch and Cairns, marking the first-ever connection between the two cities across the Tasman. The inaugural flight, which took off on April 2, is part of Jetstar’s effort to enhance competition and expand its Australia-New Zealand network with five new routes.
The flight, lasting five hours and 35 minutes, received a warm send-off, with passengers treated to a small celebration. There were also words of encouragement about Christchurch’s recovery following the city’s post-quake challenges.
Christchurch Airport CEO Justin Watson highlighted that the new route offers Kiwis a “shortcut to the tropics” while showing confidence in the city’s tourism market. Mayor Phil Mauger also described the launch as a “symbol of growth” and “opportunity” for a revitalized Ōtautahi.
