Smart Traveller’s latest warning highlights the possibility of sudden flight cancellations and disruptions, noting that Beirut airport might close unexpectedly. The statement warns of potential high ticket prices and the likelihood of additional travel complications, with the Australian government potentially unable to provide assistance in such scenarios.
The deteriorating situation in Lebanon is closely linked to regional tensions. Recent reports indicate that a rocket strike allegedly carried out by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah resulted in the deaths of 12 civilians in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah has denied involvement in the attack, but the incident has triggered a military response from Israel. On Monday, the Israel Defence Forces conducted a drone strike in Lebanon, resulting in two fatalities and three injuries.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed grave concern over the escalating conflict. “The risk of further escalation is significant, with severe consequences for the region and global stability,” he said in an interview with Sky News. Albanese emphasized the need for de-escalation and a pathway to peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.
In a related development, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is scheduled to visit Israel for a three-day trip starting Monday. Dutton’s visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations and offer support following the October 7 Hamas attack, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and more than 200 hostages, according to Israeli sources. Dutton underscored the enduring and deep-rooted ties between Australia and Israel, stressing a shared commitment to democratic values amid ongoing global challenges.
