The Canadian government has updated its travel advisory for India, urging citizens to avoid all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as border areas with Pakistan. The warning comes after a recent terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam last week. The Attari-Wagah border crossing is also closed at this time.
The advisory highlighted the tense security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, warning of high risks related to violent protests, civil unrest, and terrorism. While the warning applies to most of the region, it specifically excludes the Union Territory of Ladakh.
“Violent clashes between militants and security forces occur regularly. Terrorist attacks targeting security forces have led to civilian casualties,” the advisory stated. “Further attacks could occur at any time, and you may find yourself in a dangerous situation.”
The Canadian government also noted that the security situation along the border with Pakistan, particularly along the Line of Control (LoC), remains volatile. This area separates the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh from Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
