Foreign Ministry Advises: ‘Stay Away from Protest Areas, Remain Vigilant’. Malaysia has issued a travel advisory for its citizens traveling to or residing in the United Kingdom due to ongoing riots.
“Malaysians residing in or traveling to the United Kingdom are urged to stay away from protest areas, remain vigilant, and follow the latest updates and guidance provided by local authorities,” the Malaysian Foreign Ministry stated late Sunday.
This advisory marks Malaysia as the first nation to issue a travel warning for the UK, which is currently experiencing its worst wave of riots in 13 years. These riots have been marked by far-right demonstrators targeting asylum seekers and ethnic minority communities.
Kuala Lumpur announced that it is “closely monitoring the series of protests currently taking place in several areas” of the UK.
The unrest was fueled by a storm of anti-Muslim disinformation on social media, which spurred Islamophobic and far-right violence. This followed a fatal stabbing attack in the northern English seaside town of Southport on July 29.
Extremist far-right social media accounts falsely claimed that the suspect was a Muslim and a migrant, fueling the mob’s Islamophobic chants. However, police have identified the suspect as a 17-year-old male born in Cardiff, Wales, who lived in a village near Southport.
The Malaysian Foreign Ministry has also urged its citizens to register their presence with Malaysia’s diplomatic mission in London.
