Japan’s travel industry is calling for improved earthquake safety guidance for foreign tourists following a recent 7.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Kyushu. The earthquake, which struck on August 8, has heightened fears of a potentially larger quake in the Nankai Trough, a significant offshore fault stretching 900 kilometers.
The powerful tremor has heightened alert levels across a broad area of southern Japan, from Okinawa in the south to the vicinity of Tokyo Bay. The travel industry is expressing concerns that tourists may lack critical safety information, leaving them vulnerable in the event of future disasters. As a result, there has been a noticeable surge in travel cancellations as visitors seek assurances and preparedness measures.
