Travel across Tokyo and eastern Japan faces significant disruptions due to the impending arrival of Typhoon Ampil, which is expected to impact the region between August 16 and August 17.
As reported by NHK World Japan, Typhoon Ampil is intensifying as it moves northward. This tropical storm is anticipated to approach eastern Japan’s main island, including Tokyo, during this critical travel period coinciding with the Obon summer holidays, one of the busiest times of the year in Japan.
In response to the forecast, JR Tokai has announced the cancellation of all Tokaido shinkansen services between Tokyo and Nagoya on August 16. JR East has also issued a warning of potential suspensions and delays affecting several shinkansen lines, including the Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Akita, and Yamagata routes, from around noon through the evening on the same day.
Travelers are advised to monitor updates on service disruptions through the JR East and JR Tokai official Twitter accounts for the latest information.
In the air travel sector, both All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines have announced the cancellation of approximately 500 flights on August 16, impacting services to and from Haneda and Narita airports. ANA has also indicated that there may be delays and other disruptions on flights scheduled for August 17.
Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about potential changes to their travel plans and check with airlines and train operators for the most current information.
