The Dutch government is actively monitoring the escalating mpox outbreak across several African nations but has yet to issue new travel advisories or warnings for its citizens. The virus, previously known as monkeypox, has been identified in its dangerous clade 1 strain in Stockholm, Sweden, as reported by the Swedish Public Health Agency on Thursday.
This outbreak follows a recent declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO), which has classified the mpox situation as a “public health emergency of international concern.” This designation reflects the severity and global impact of the outbreak.
The clade 1 strain is known for causing more severe symptoms and is associated with a higher mortality rate compared to the clade 2b strain. The latter was responsible for the 2022 outbreak in the Netherlands, which saw over 1,200 cases. According to the Public Health Agency of Sweden, while the clade 2b strain primarily spread through sexual contact, the clade 1 strain is more commonly transmitted through close contact within households, particularly affecting children.
