Airfares for the upcoming festival season have surged, with significant price hikes reported for Diwali and Onam flights. According to a recent analysis by travel portal ixigo, ticket prices have increased by 10-15% for Diwali travel and by 20-25% for flights to Kerala cities during Onam.
For the period from October 30 to November 5, 2024, the average one-way fare for a non-stop flight from Delhi to Chennai has jumped 25% to INR 7,618 compared to last year. Fares on the Mumbai-Hyderabad route have also risen by 21%, reaching INR 5,162. Similarly, flights from Delhi to Goa and Delhi to Ahmedabad have seen price increases of 19% and 16%, respectively, bringing fares to INR 5,999 and INR 4,930.
Other popular routes such as Delhi-Chennai, Mumbai-Bengaluru, and Delhi-Hyderabad now have one-way fares ranging between INR 4,000 and INR 5,000, reflecting a 10-15% year-on-year increase.
Conversely, some routes have experienced a decrease in fares. Notably, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad flight has dropped 27% to INR 2,508, the Mumbai-Udaipur route has fallen 25% to INR 4,890, Bengaluru-Hyderabad flights are down 23% to INR 3,383, and Mumbai-Jammu fares have decreased by 21% to INR 7,826.
For Onam celebrations in Kerala, fare trends vary. Some routes have seen increases of up to 30%, such as Hyderabad-Thiruvananthapuram flights, which now cost INR 4,102, and Mumbai-Calicut flights, which have risen to INR 4,448. Conversely, other routes have experienced price reductions of 6-35%. Rajnish Kumar of ixigo attributes the higher fares to a surge in travel demand, noting that flight bookings and searches for travel to Kerala have doubled in early September compared to the previous year.
