African Health Officials Urge Solidarity, Oppose Travel Bans Amid Mpox Outbreak

by Mary

African health officials are calling on the global community to resist imposing travel bans on nations grappling with a new mpox outbreak. Instead, they are urging for international support in enhancing testing and vaccination efforts across the continent.

In the past week, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reported approximately 1,400 new cases and 24 fatalities linked to a new variant of mpox.

“Don’t punish Africa,” emphasized Jean Kaseya, the head of Africa CDC, during a media briefing on Tuesday. “We hear from here and there that you want to apply travel bans… but what we need is solidarity and appropriate support. This vaccine is expensive.”

The plea highlights the urgent need for global cooperation in addressing the outbreak, focusing on providing resources rather than restricting movement, which could further harm the affected regions.
