TOKYO — After a year-long suspension, the sale of Suica and Pasmo contactless travel passes will recommence on September 1, 2024. The resumption follows a significant disruption caused by a global chip shortage that affected the issuance of these essential travel cards.
East Japan Railway (JR East), which issues the Suica pass, and Pasmo, which issues its namesake card, halted the sales of these passes in August 2023 due to difficulties in sourcing the necessary chips for their production.
The resumption of sales will come as welcome news to travelers in eastern Japan, who have been unable to obtain these passes for the past year.
