The Myanmar junta has issued a new directive restricting travel for individuals from the Wa, Palaung (Ta’ang), and Kokang communities who hold Shan State National Identification Cards with the prefix “13/”. Travel agencies report that the sale of tickets to these individuals is now prohibited unless they obtain prior approval from the Military Council. The duration of this restriction remains unspecified.
On August 22, a bus line operator servicing routes between Yangon, Mandalay, Keng Tung, and Tachileik confirmed the travel ban, noting that affected individuals will require explicit permission from the Military Council to travel.
This move follows recent gains by the MNDAA and TNLA during the first and second phases of Operation 1027 in northern Shan State, where they captured several towns and established administrative control, including over the Military Council’s Northeastern Military Command.
While the UWSA did not directly confront the Military Council, they seized administrative control in Hopang and Pan Lon during the initial phase of Operation 1027 after the Three Brotherhood Alliance’s attack. In the ongoing phase, UWSA forces have taken positions in Tangyan and Lashio, areas previously controlled by the Military Council.
In the Ayeyarwady region, local residents report that the Military Council has instructed police and local administrators to monitor the influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Rakhine State, where intense fighting continues.
Currently, the Military Council has lost control of over 70 towns across Myanmar, including areas in Northern Shan State and Rakhine State, to revolutionary forces.
