China’s senior travelers are significantly influencing the travel industry, according to a recent report from Trip.com Group. The company revealed that this demographic has spent over RMB 1.6 billion ($224.6 million) on its platform to date. In response to this trend, Trip.com launched the Old Friends Club last quarter, specifically targeting individuals aged 50 and older.

China is experiencing one of the world’s fastest-growing ageing populations, with the number of people over 60 projected to reach 28% by 2040.

To better serve older travelers, Trip.com introduced a “family cloud” feature. This innovative tool enables younger, tech-savvy family members to assist their elders in planning and booking travel through their smartphones.

As China’s economy continues to expand, senior travelers are increasingly investing in mid to high-end travel experiences. “This demographic is shifting away from budget travel and seeking more refined and unique experiences,” said a company spokesperson.
