The Secret to Discovering Exceptional Meals While Traveling

Mary

When traveling, many of us resort to searching online for dining options as mealtime approaches. However, experienced travelers and food enthusiasts suggest that exploring local dining spots the traditional way can lead to more satisfying culinary experiences.

During a recent trip to Madrid, I followed an online recommendation to visit a highly-rated food market. I chose a popular stall and ordered the tortilla española, only to be met with a disappointing and flavorless dish, coupled with hasty service. Unsatisfied and still hungry, I decided to explore further rather than returning to my hotel.

My search led me to a quaint cervecería, where I discovered anchovies on toast—perfectly salty and slightly oily, complementing the house white wine excellently. As I enjoyed my meal, I was welcomed by a group of locals who invited me to join them for another drink. Feeling a bit tipsy, I mustered the courage to practice my Spanish and asked my new friends for recommendations to enhance the rest of my stay in Madrid.
