Oropouche Virus Spreads Through Travel: Key Information for Europeans

The Oropouche virus, also known as “sloth fever,” has been detected in Europe, with 19 cases reported so far. The outbreak is linked to travel to specific regions in the Americas.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an alert regarding the increase in Oropouche virus cases across the Americas, noting a concerning development with cases now appearing in Europe.

In June and July of this year, European health authorities identified 19 cases of Oropouche virus disease. All affected individuals had traveled to Cuba or Brazil prior to experiencing symptoms.
