The Australian government has issued a new travel advisory through its Smartraveller website, highlighting heightened health risks for travelers to Europe, North and South America, and Asia. The warning specifically addresses recent outbreaks of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu.
The advisory notes that while human cases of avian influenza are rare, travelers should remain vigilant due to the presence of multiple strains of the virus, including the highly contagious H5N1 strain.
In recent months, various strains of avian influenza have been reported globally, leading to significant outbreaks in poultry populations. In Australia alone, three separate strains have been detected this year, resulting in extensive culls and egg shortages.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade emphasizes the importance of awareness and caution for those traveling to regions affected by these outbreaks.
