Gatwick Travel Disruptions Affect Thousands as Air Traffic Control Staff Shortage Leads to 100 Flight Cancellations

by Mary

Thousands of holidaymakers have been impacted by significant travel disruptions at Gatwick Airport due to a shortage of air traffic control staff. The shortage has resulted in the cancellation of at least 100 flights, affecting more than 15,000 passengers and costing airlines millions of pounds.

Nats, the air traffic control provider responsible for Gatwick’s operations, has implemented temporary air traffic restrictions to ensure safety. This measure has led to widespread flight cancellations and delays, particularly affecting easyJet, which saw at least 64 of its flights cancelled on one of the peak travel days of the summer.

The current disruptions mirror previous incidents at Gatwick, including similar problems experienced a year ago and again in June 2024. A spokesperson for Nats has issued an apology for the inconvenience caused but has not provided a timeline for when the situation will be resolved.
