The UK will terminate its visa-free travel arrangement with Jordan, according to a statement from the Jordanian Foreign Ministry. This decision follows concerns from the British government about misuse of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system.
The ETA system, which permitted Jordanian citizens to enter the UK without a visa for up to two years, will be scrapped effective September 10, 2024. British consular officials notified Jordanian authorities of the change, citing issues related to the alleged misuse of the travel system.
The cancellation of the ETA system was reportedly communicated by British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. According to Jordanian officials, the move is intended to address concerns that some individuals were using the UK as a transit point to claim asylum and subsequently travel to the US.
A leaked letter from Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to King Abdullah’s office, obtained by Middle East Eye, confirms the UK’s intention to cease the use of the ETA system from the specified date.
