China’s inbound tourism sector is projected to maintain its upward trajectory through the end of 2024, with the potential to reach pre-pandemic levels seen in 2019, according to recent estimates. Data from the National Immigration Administration reveal that approximately 14.64 million foreign visits were made to the Chinese mainland in the first half of 2024. Of these, about 11 million were for tourism purposes, equating to roughly 70 percent of the number recorded in the same period of 2019.
In 2019, the mainland saw 31.88 million foreign tourists as part of a total of 145 million inbound visits, which also included travelers from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
This positive trend is attributed to several factors, including China’s revised visa policies, increased international flight options, and the country’s favorable global tourism image. As of now, China has implemented a unilateral visa-free policy for 16 countries and regions and holds mutual visa exemption agreements with 24 nations. Additionally, the 144-hour visa-free transit policy allows travelers from 54 eligible countries, such as Austria, Belgium, and Canada, to stay for up to six days in select cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Changsha.
The resumption of international flights has also contributed to this recovery. The report indicates that, during the first half of 2024, the Chinese mainland operated flights to and from 73 countries and regions, matching pre-pandemic levels. By late June, regular international flights had rebounded to about 70 percent of the 2019 figures.
Furthermore, the report highlights a shift in traveler preferences, with an increasing number of foreign visitors opting for individual travel experiences over group tours. These travelers are also showing a growing interest in exploring local Chinese culture and engaging in traditional activities.
