Bhutan Unveils New Tourism Services Portal

Bhutan’s Department of Tourism has introduced a new Tourism Services Portal aimed at enhancing the visitor experience. The platform now features over 400 Bhutanese tour operators, nearly 1,000 certified guides, 100 hotels, numerous homestays, and various other service providers.

Kinley Gyeltshen, chairman of the Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators, highlighted the portal’s significance, stating, “This portal is a game-changer for visitors to Bhutan. It simplifies the process of finding and connecting with Bhutanese tour operators and planning the ideal trip. The user-friendly interface and intuitive drop-down filters significantly enhance the overall visitor experience.”

The launch of this portal marks a key milestone as Bhutan prepares to celebrate 50 years of international tourism in 2024. It represents a significant step in the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize and sustain its distinctive approach to tourism. The Department of Tourism is actively promoting the new portal through its website, marketing materials, and social media channels.

Visitors should be aware that traveling to Bhutan requires a visa and permit for entry. Travelers from the United States and most other countries must secure these documents prior to their trip. Applications can be made online or through a Bhutanese tour operator, with visa processing typically taking about five days. Additionally, all visitors are required to pay Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of $100 per person per night (reduced rates for children), along with a non-refundable $40 visa application fee. The SDF supports vital cultural, environmental, health, and educational projects throughout Bhutan.
